Texas, like other states, requires all drivers to carry a stated minimum of liability coverage ($25,000 for property damage, $30,000 per person/$60,000 per accident for personal injury). And although most drivers in Texas comply with the law and carry at least these legal minimums, many do not. Some estimates put the percentage of uninsured drivers in Texas at between 20 and 25 percent. Here is what will happen if you are caught as a member of that group:
We acquired quotes from over 103 companies in 200 cities across the U.S. for a sample 17-year-old male driver who drives a 2011 Toyota Camry. We specified that he previously did not have insurance and was opting for full coverage (see limits below). We included the top 15 cheapest companies that were also available in at least 15 cities nationwide. For adding onto a parent's policy, we assumed the parent was a 45-year-old male, married, with no previous accidents or incidents in his driving record.
Defensive driving classes go beyond the basics taught in driver’s education by having motorists learn how to drive in hazardous conditions, anticipate dangerous situations and avoid accidents. The best part? The cost is usually only $25 to $75 and you’ll typically snag a discount of five to 15 percent for three years.  Note, however, that insurer and state law requirements for these discounts vary a great deal. For example, 21st Century Insurance offers a discount to drivers under the age of 21 who take a state approved defensive driver course but with Esurance the discount is not age-based and is available to all drivers in New York, New Jersey, North Dakota, Georgia and Oklahoma.
Car insurance rates have continued to climb in recent years, and 2019 will see the continuation of that trend. If you’re in the market for car insurance for new drivers, say teens, or car insurance for college students, that isn’t good news, as rates are super high for inexperienced motorists. But you’re in the right place to learn how to lower car insurance costs, even though finding cheap car insurance for young drivers is challenging, it’s not impossible.
In western states, Grange Insurance Association (not to be confused with Grange Insurance) typically offered some of the cheapest car insurance policies to young drivers. Grange operates in California, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Washington and Oregon. In Oregon, young driver rates from Grange were about 75% less expensive than the state average. For those looking for car insurance in California, GEICO is also another cheap alternative.
Liberty Mutual has some of the best agents and customer service in the industry and was voted 2nd for customer satisfaction in a 2012 study by J.D. Powers. Although agents typically parter with community organizations and employers to sell policies, anybody can get a quote and a policy from Liberty Mutual. Two features in particular make them a company to put at the top of your list for consideration:
Adding a 17-year-old male driver to an existing policy will add $2,593 more in auto insurance costs per year—increasing the average annual rate from $1,259 to $3,852. This saves $5,096 per year—a 66% reduction in auto insurance costs—compared to the cost of the same 17-year-old getting their own policy. Additionally, if parents happen to insure their car with GEICO, their teen will have access to GEICO family pricing. This is a program where a teen can—when they get their own policy—get a discounted rate due to the family being a part of GEICO.

Reduce your mileage: One of the things insurers will look at is how many miles you estimate you’ll be covering over the course of the year. The less you are out on the road, the less of a perceived risk you are. Therefore, being accurate with your estimate mileage will avoid overpaying for miles you won’t use. And if you can reduce this by using public transport or getting involved in a car share you may save money on your premium.
This is another online-based insurance company that promises steep discounts and quality coverage. Progressive touts its standing as the number one auto insurance site, and promises to help you find the best rates — even if the best rate is with a company other than Progressive. It’s not a bad place to start your search, since you can see multiple quotes from multiple companies. You can also get help from a local agent or via phone.
